That's right we have become the cliche of, 'it's a nice place to visit but I wouldn't want to live there'. Maybe even afford to be there.

Maybe that's the fate of so-called western empires like the U.K. and USA, we are destined to rot from within. Like successful businesses that eventually are handed off to the owners offspring, not always a good idea.
