I'm guessing that Medium has a much bigger population of writers than 1 or 2 years ago? Maybe not, but crazy behavior also seems to pick up sharply with sideways economic conditions.
Say this was the great depression of the last century, if people get driven too crazy back in that day they couldn't just jump on the internet, read a Sherry story and magically switch into outrage mode, there was no internet of course. Maybe a story about what I heard on my party line, or some such reportage.
But now we have at the very least 100 million more people with which to experience crazy outrage or any kind of social-psychotic behaviors. Basically, we are not outnumbered yet, right(?), but if our economy continues to go sideways, and these extras can not be kept gainfully busy, well, who knows what the future might bring? It's not pre-2000 anymore. Yet there are way more people to deal with, they are not just armed with guns they have word processors, etc.
