Considering the expense budgets for any media type, I think it's more like journalists and reporters depend on Twitter as a source since extremely few news corporations have budgets to dig for news themselves, which is no longer in the cards in that industry except for a very few compared to all postings anywhere on a given day.
In fact, weekly many news outlets get spoofed on stories that may originate on Twitter. Maybe if snopes.com was compensated for each non-factual posting their revenues might exceed Tesla's evaluation by now.
